“Master, don’t go, master!”
“Hey! You said you'd see me through to being the best cook I could be! That's not what you promised!”
“Please don’t leave us… not like this…”
“...This is the difference between the lifespan of a human and an elf. There's nothing we can do about it. Though it seems to be a lot earlier than the average human.”
“Lord, I pray that you will be born again. And then I will serve you again.”
“I'm not going anywhere! I will make this a world where there's nothing to be frightened of when you come back to life!”
As my consciousness fades, I hear a lot of voices from around the bed where I am lying.
Yeah, I guess I'm going to die soon.
Somehow, I know myself.
Reborn, huh?
The legendary "reincarnation magic" that I couldn’t complete before my death.
I had given up on the idea that we could not live together, and after all I had done, I came to the conclusion.
With the slightest of wishes, I cast the spell on myself, but I’m already dying.
Honestly, the success rate is nil.
But there's no going back.
And they can live without me now.
No, maybe they didn't need me in the first place.
If she marries another elf properly and lives happily for the rest of her life, so be it.
"You don't need me... You're free to live your life the way you want to live it... But if I can come back to life… Welcome me with open arms.....
It seems that my final stop is here.
I squeezed out my last strength, opened my eyes, and watched the elves peering at me.
Yes, that was 20 years ago.
When the elves and I started living together…
***
The Kingdom of Highhorn.
I was born and raised in the Highhorn Kingdom, a country that has advanced through magic, bordered by the Demon realm ruled by the Demon King to the north and the Elven Country where the Elves live to the west.
When I was five years old, humans and demons were always fighting on that boundary, and the elves just kept quiet about it.
I still remember living near the border and being young at the time, I was frightened of demons day and night.
In the midst of this, magic, swordsmanship, and magical tools on the human side developed rapidly, and the number of things that could defeat demons in various forms such as the national army and adventurers increased, and humans gradually came to outwit demons.
Before long, demons were being treated as a stepping stone for gaining riches and prestige.
Finally, the Demon King at the time changed his focus.
And so did the Kingdom.
They invaded the country of the Elves.
I was only 12 years old. I don't know how it happened, but the invasion of the Elven country was quick and the country was easily destroyed in only a little over a year. Rumour has it that the kingdom was in one piece.
This is how the elven country collapsed and the west became infested with demons, but the relationship between humans and demons has not changed much since then.
Demons still invade to devour men, and men still fight for money and honor.
It's that kind of relationship.
The only thing that changed was the value of elves...
Even though in the elven country that was destroyed by the invasion of the demon realm and the kingdom, there were a few survivors.
Unfortunately for them, elven rights didn't exist.
Elves found by demons were devoured without leaving a trace of their bodies, and elves found by humans were sold to slave traders all over the place.
Originally, the abilities of elves far surpassed those of humans and demons.
It is said that the reason for the collapse of the country was due to its lack of foreign intelligence and pride in being a neutral territory, which ultimately caused them to be unable to react to the war on two fronts.
Also, the elves, both male and female, were very beautiful.
Which is why the black market underneath the kingdom sells elves day and night for staggering high prices.
In the midst of all this, I, Fischer, turned 25 years old, not knowing that elves were being sold down the road I was treading.
Ignorance is a terrible thing, and I had no idea that such a wretched thing was going on underground, for my steps were light and even skipping.
But you have to understand that I couldn’t be anything other than overjoyed! I’ve just been recognized by the Kingdom.
A perfect vial of my own complete recovery potion.
''I did it, I finally did it..... Now I'm a millionaire too!
With the complete recovery potion I showed the king earlier in my right hand, and in my left the patent letter.
I skip and run all the way home, wondering if this is what they mean by with flowers in both hands.
Maybe that doesn't make sense in context, and it's only a matter of time before I stop my lame skipping, since it would take three days to take a horse-drawn carriage from here to my house.
This is the culmination of my seven years of self-taught learning about potions after graduating from high school and not going to college. That is this potion of complete recovery.
I've always been threatened by demons, and in fact, my father died fighting them to protect his family.
But my father was supposed to be alive.
If only there was money in the house to buy recovery potions, or if we could make them.
But reality wasn't so sweet, and after a week of fighting the demons, my dad took his last breath.
I didn't even have the money to go to school, so I spent three years of junior high school in my hometown and continued to study on my own at home, and when I was 15 years old, I took the high school entrance exam and was admitted to the best school in the kingdom.
With a scholarship, of course.
After leaving home, I went to the dormitory and spent all three years studying.
What I have gained in the last three years were a few friends, a lot of knowledge, and a hypothesis that I formulated all on my own.
What I didn’t gain was any physical ability.
The swordplay class was already going pretty terribly, so I'll put it off for now.
Due to the hypothesis that I derived in these three years, I did not go to university, but instead, returned to my hometown and devoted myself to my research.
Before making the potion of complete recovery, I succeeded in making various products, such as the potion of intermediate recovery and various magic tools, which greatly helped in my research because of the fact that I had plenty of money.
Thanks to this, I was able to honor my mother who lived poorly.
And now, seven years later, I finally succeeded in making a potion of complete recovery and returned to the royal city to register it.
Of course, this Potion of Complete Recovery can only be made by me, and It’s not possible to make it just because I taught a person how to make it. Besides, it takes a lot of money and time to make one of these.
So I decided to dilute this complete recovery potion many times over with water and sell it to the kingdom.
The king has agreed, and if I dilute it in water, I can make a lot from a single piece, and that's going to make me a lot of money from now on.
I mean, I could be a millionaire.
The only regret I have is that my mother fell ill and died before I could complete this.
One more year sooner...
I was in a daze and stopped in my tracks as I thought of my father and mother.
"Huh, so after all, the people you wanted to protect the most won't come back, will they? Now, what do I do? For the time being, I could live on that diluted potion money for the rest of my life, and that's...
For the first time, I look at the documents I was given earlier.
It's the first time I've seen such a number in my life.
It could be said that the kingdom has not had the most adequate of healing potions in circulation of the market, and the king's happiness is evident in the amount of money stated.
That's right. Even that recovery medicine diluted in water can cure in an instant if you put it on the wound.
For the time being, I think I'll spend a few days roaming the royal city.
That's what I thought when I made my way back to the inn I had just booked.
''Oh, well, well, if it isn't Fischer-sama. Thank you for signing with me.”
I am suddenly spoken to by a well-built man in front of me.
There is a strong bodyguard standing behind him, which is kinda honestly scary.
I believe this man is the merchant who made the deal to sell my potions in the castle earlier.
He seems to be a very famous merchant in the kingdom and has a very good reputation.
Yes, there's a gentle vibe to him...I think.
And I'm going to be getting a lot of money from this guy from now on, too.
“No need for thanks, I'm happy to sign a contract with you because it would be quite suspicious for a young man like myself to sell recovery drugs.”
“It makes me happy to hear you say that. Leave the rest to me. So, are you free after this?”
“Yeah, I was planning on going to the back to my room to rest.”
“Then why don't you come downstairs with me?”
“Downstairs? What's in the basement?”
''Why, don't you know Fischer-sama? Now I’m worried. I'm sorry I’ll change the words, let’s go, you're going to come with me to the underground.”
...underground? You mean under this road?
I'm don’t quite get it, but I think I should probably go with him
Maybe there is some sort etiquette that I should learn about.
“I understand. I'll follow you.”
Thus I decided to follow the tall man.
Without even knowing what was going on down there.
